Q. When should I water?
A. In general, early-morning is always best for grass. Resist watering during the hot and dry afternoons since much of the water evaporates before it is absorbed into the soil.
Q. How much, how often?
A. During dry weather, you should water every 2-3 days, heavy enough to saturate your soil without flooding it. For best results, water in shorter intervals to allow for better water infiltration. For example, if you have 5 zones that need watered for 30 minutes each, run 3 consecutive cycles, watering each zone for 10 minutes per cycle.
In the hot, dry summer, your lawn needs a minimum of 1 ½ inches of water weekly. Use a measuring cup until you figure out the right setting for your sprinkler system.
Q. Do I need to dethatch and aerate?
A. Turf can choke itself on too much unhealthy buildup of dying grass, and the soil can become compacted. If so, you may need to take mechanical action. However, our programs will eliminate thatch buildup and naturally aerate your soil.
Q. How low can I mow?
A. Most grasses grown around homes are not as tolerant as a golf course green. Although there are ideal mowing heights for different types of grass, a height of 3 inches is a good target to shoot for. Longer grass allows for a stronger, deeper root system. Do not cut your grass too short especially during the hot, dry periods! A lawn with a strong root system is much more resistant to drought and disease.
Mow regularly. No more than 1/3 of your grass blade should be taken off in one cutting. Mow high and mow often.
Q. Is it best to bag grass or mulch it?
A. Mulch your lawn, do not bag it! Your lawn wants the organic matter from you grass clippings. Returning the clippings to your lawn puts essential nutrients back into your soil and is a great fertilizer. Only bag grass clippings on your first and last mowings of the year.
